Finca Buen Pais and Area Information
Finca Buen Pais is a 55-acre private reserve and art garden. The land is lush with tropical foliage, flowering trees and shrubs,
and fruit trees. There is abundant wildlife, including howler monkeys, gautusas, coatimundis, ocelots, jagarundis, deer, armadillo,
and peccaries, and there are a wide assortment of colorful birds, including parrots, parakeets, toucans, motmots, manakins,
woodpeckers, hummingbirds, and trogans.
The land is bordered on three sides by rivers that have carved deep jungle ravines. Here there are towering ancient trees,
rarely seen in much of Costa Rica or the world, some covered with exotic orchids and epiphytes. Trails lead to a private
waterfall with its own swimming hole.
Set amid the rolling hills and gardens of Buen Pais are numerous art installations—whimsical sculptures and mobiles created by the owners from driftwood, gourds, and other natural objects. The land affords many private areas to watch a turkey vulture dry its wings, observe a mother howler monkey carrying her tiny baby, or simply sit in peaceful reflection.
Horses live on the property, and horseback riding tours can be arranged through the traditional countryside from your front door. There is a full-time caretaker who maintains the property.
Buen Pais offers the perfect combination of serenity and accessibility. If you want, you can read a book in the hammock
on your veranda or at poolside. You can ride horses on backcountry trails to a deep swimming hole on the nearby Rio Ario
or go bird watching in the cool morning. But if you want to explore, the tourist towns of Montezuma, Santa Theresa, and
Mal Pais are only 30 minutes away. In addition, an easy 10 minute drive finds you in nearby Manzanillo, an undeveloped
beach on which one can walk for miles and, on many days, not see another person.
